Frequently Asked Questions

If I'm hypnotised will I know what's happening?

Yes,.  Hypnosis is a state in which you are very focused so you will be aware of what’s going on.  It is not a sleep state and I often work with your eyes open.

Can I be made to do or say something I don't want to do or say in hypnosis?

No.  If I make a suggestion to you that you don’t agree with, you will just reject it.  If our work together brings up something that you don’t want to disclose you can just tell me what the emotion is I don’t need to know the what it’s about – I respect your privacy.  If that particular memory is causing you embarrassment, guilt or any other negative feelings, I have lots of ways of neutralising the emotion without you needing to disclose the content.

Is hypnosis dangerous?

No hypnosis is not dangerous, it utilises natural states that the mind automatically does.

What does being hypnotised feel like?

Most people will report that their experience of hypnosis was both extremely enjoyable and very relaxing.  Hypnosis is not necessarily associated with being relaxed, there are many different ways of getting you into hypnosis, including shock.   I want you to enjoy the experience and so I will induce hypnosis in a way that enables you to feel very relaxed and comfortable.

Will you be able to control my mind?

No.  You are in control all the time and you can choose how deeply into hypnosis you want to go.  I’m more of a guide, that helps you to make the decisions and changes that you want to make.

What if I can't be hypnotised?

I believe that everyone has the ability to be hypnotised, it’s really a case of following instructions.  A very light hypnotic state can be brought about simply by engaging the imagination, and this is perfectly appropriate for therapy.  Very deep trance states are more suited for people having surgery without anaesethic!
